The
Synergy Medical Hospital General Surgery Residency is
a 5 year categorical general surgery residency
graduating 2 chief residents per year.
Facilities
consist of two major hospitals with almost 1,000 beds
and a 23 county referral area totaling approximately
1 million people.
Our
residents come from many different states. Approximately
60% of graduating residents enter private practice, while
the remainder pursue additional training in many fields.
Our
focus is to produce a well-rounded surgeon grounded in
the fundamental principles of operations and patient
care
25% of graduated residents practice in the Saginaw area.
Community
Based
Residents
are provided with a rich educational experience in a variety
of clinical settings. The training encompasses education in
basic science; cognitive and technical skills; development
of clinical knowledge and maturity; and acquisition of surgical
judgment.
Upon
completing the program, each resident has performed 950 operations
as primary surgeon and 350 as first assistant.
To
prepare our residents to become surgeons of the highest caliber,
appropriate emphasis is placed on a structured and well-rounded
didactic curriculum. Residents attend weekly surgical conferences
that include:

conferences with guest speakers
Resident
study sessions
Basic
science conferences
Morbidity
and mortality
Time
and funding also are provided for residents to attend
at least one nationregional conference of their choice during
each year of training.
Residents
receive an academic appointment as Instructor in Surgery for
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and participate
in MSU-CHM medical students' education on a clinical and academic basis.
Peer
Reviewed Research/Publications
Surgery
residents are encouraged to pursue research projects in basic
clinical surgery. Each resident prepares and presents his
or her research at the department's annual resident competition.
Residents receive strong support from Synergy Medical's Research
Department, which is staffed by a full-time director, a dedicated
research assistant and employees with expertise in computer
technology, slide production and much more.

Saginaw,
MI is a pleasant city with a population of 70,000 and surrounding
population of approximately 400,000. Most residents live within
minutes of the hospitals and housing is plentiful and affordable.
