An essential component to the Family Medicine Residency is the structured didactic curriculum. Grands are presented every Thursday from 8-9. A block of time for lectures has been created to present the topical lecture series. Topics presented include a team business meeting, resident presentations, Practice Management topics, Procedural skills, Women’s Health topics, OB/Gyn topics, Pediatric topics, Geriatrics, Ethics, End of life and hospice issues, EKG lectures, and Behavioral Science topics. Residents also will present at least 2 Grand Round lectures and compete for a cash award for outstanding presentations. Resident Journal Club is held on Wednesday evenings once a month.
The Department offers training in Geriatric Medicine. Synergy faculty. lead a multidisciplinary team that provides functional assessment of the elderly. In the Ambulatory Geriatric Evaluation Service (AGES), resident physicians participate in the AGES clinic evaluations and perform home visits. Residents also attend to their own nursing home patients one half day a month at the St. Francis Nursing Home. Residents also serve as the resident hospice director in conjunction with the Covenant VNA Hospice. They attend the multidisciplinary team conferences and participate in home visits in conjunction with either a nurse or social worker.
Residents
work one-on-one with faculty in the Department's Procedure
Clinics. Residents are exposed to a wide array of pathology while
providing procedural services.
The
Department performs several full-day and half-day annual conferences,
including training in suturing and skin surgery, breast care,
colposcopy, casting, evidence-based medicine, office counseling,
and financial planning. |
