Two teams participate in MedWar Challenge
MedWAR is short for Medical Wilderness Adventure Race. It is a unique event that combines wilderness medical challenges with the growing sport of adventure racing.
Synergy Medical residents have participated since 2001 – winning the competition three times over the past 8 years. This year, two teams participated: Team “Code 12” Frank Sabatino EM3 with Brian Purchase & Matt Deibel, Synergy Medical core faculty and Team “Synergy” Nicole McCadie, EM2, Adam Nofziger EM2 and Tony Mills EM3.

Kathleen Cowling, MD, FACEP, was elected Vice-President of the American College of Emergency Physicians in Boston in October 2009. Previously the ACEP Secretary-Treasurer, Dr. Cowling has been a core faculty member very active with the residents for more than 10 years. |
Synergy Residents Compete in SimWars
The Synergy Medical Residency Program was selected to participate in the Second Annual SimWars competition this year on October 6, 2009 at the ACEP Scientific Assembly. The event was co-sponsored by FERNE and EMRA with support from the SAEM Simulation Academy. The residents did several simulation cases and won third place in the competition.
Synergy Medical Program Director wins ACEP’s prestigious Education Award
The Outstanding Contribution in Education Award was presented to Mary Jo Wagner, MD, FACEP at the ACEP Scientific Assembly in Boston, MA on October 7, 2009. Dr. Wagner was recognized for dedicating her career to encouraging excellence in emergency medicine clinical practice, teaching and research in emergency medicine.

Three from Synergy Medical present at SAEM Midwest Regional Meeting
Senior residents Jason Carter and Joel Robinson and medical student Tony Cummings presented abstracts at the 2009 SAEM Midwest Regional research meeting. The residents presented abstracts involving EMS and Simulation education research which is ongoing in the department.

Synergy Medical selected for training site for Saudi Arabian residents
Two Saudi Arabian residents started with the first year class in July 2009, as part of a program through the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission to help train more Saudi Arabian physicians in emergency medicine. Though specifically selected for this program, Adel Alghamdi and Sameh Sejiney both went through the same ERAs interview process and will complete the same training as the other residents. Their participation increases the first year class to a total of 10 residents.
