PGY-1
Call responsibilities vary with each rotation. Residents will have call about
once every fourth night. On the service, call nights average
every fourth to fifth night. There is now a night float system in place, with
the on call responsibilities from Sunday through Thursday ending at 9 p.m.
with night coverage provided by the night float. On Friday and Saturdays, call
is a 24 hour shift.
PGY-2
Call varies with each rotation, but resident call responsibilities are about
one in five nights. Several rotations in the second year have no resident
call responsibilities. Call for the service is similar
to the PGY 1 year.
PGY-3
The Department’s call system has been changed substantially, freeing
residents to participate in less service responsibilities to enhance learning.
About eight months of the senior year have no call responsibilities, allowing
residents to participate in alternate educational opportunities in the evenings
(special educational seminars, community medicine projects, physicals or moonlighting).
Call for the service is similar to the PGY 1 year, with no
night float call in the PGY 3 year. Chief call covers the service
as senior supervision, with faculty backup.
