--> Synergy Medical Education Alliance - MSU-CHM Saginaw Campus

Welcome to the MSU-CHM Saginaw Campus

Michigan State University (MSU) College of Human Medicine (CHM) partners with Synergy Medical Education Alliance (Synergy) as one the 6 community campuses providing clinical education in the Years 3 and 4 of the medical school curriculum.

In 2004, the Saginaw Campus redesigned itself through CHM support to provide a program called Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved/Vulnerable (LMUV) that selects students prior to matriculation through an application process.  This program is crafted to function within the required curriculum of CHM.

The purpose of the program is to:

  • Provide experiences to medical students to help them care for underserved/vulnerable populations with sensitivity and expertise, while helping communities address public health needs affecting level of wellness of individuals and groups.

  • Appreciate the impact of direct care delivery, epidemiologic research, and health education on health status as well as health policy implications.

There are three main components of the LMUV program: Urban—Rural—International. Since implementing the LMUV program, the student numbers have at least doubled each year.  In 2004 we began with 3 students who graduated in 2006 from the LMUV program.  In 2005, 5 students entered the program.  Three graduated in 2007, while 2 extended their programs participating in graduate programs in pathology and a Masters in Public Health, respectively for graduation in 2008. In 2006 5 students were admitted to the program with graduation of 7 students in 2008.   In 2007, 9 students were admitted to the program.  It is anticipated that by 2011, there will be a complement of 20 third year and 20 fourth year students at the Saginaw Campus.
