MSU-CHM - About Synergy Medical
Synergy Medical Education Alliance (Synergy) was formed in 1969 to coordinate all of the medical education activities in the Saginaw community. In 1972 Synergy became a clinical campus of the MSU College of Human Medicine training approximately 40 third and fourth year students and 80 residents . Our affiliate hospitals are located within minutes of one another and have formed strong and productive working relationships. Because of this team approach, we can provide our residents and medical students with the best learning experiences of each affiliate institution, Covenant Medical Center - Cooper, Covenant Medical Center - Harrison and St. Mary's of Michigan Hospital . The corporation's primary educational missions include undergraduate medical education (third and fourth year medical students), residency training and continuing medical education for all Saginaw physicians. Our formal affiliation with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) means that residents and faculty benefit from daily interaction with third- and fourth-year medical students who are completing their clinical training in the Saginaw area. Synergy is governed by a Board comprised of representatives of the two hospitals and MSU/CHM.
Approximately 80 resident physicians in RRC approved program in the areas of Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetric and Gynecology, Family Practice and Emergency medicine comprise the Synergy Medical's house staff, while 130 physicians form the attending staff available for undergraduate and graduate medical education. Our residents rotate among our member hospitals, which have a combined bed capacity of nearly 1,000, and feature state-of-the-art facilities and the best in medical care. We provide over 40,000 outpatient patient visits annually and a medical library which acts as the health sciences library for the region. Synergy lies within a designated Health Manpower Shortage Area contributing to the education of students in understanding issues surrounding care for the underserved/vulnerable.
Residents and medical students rotate at Covenant Medical Center - Cooper, Covenant Medical Center - Harrison and St. Mary's of Michigan Hospital . Covenant and St. Mary's of Michigan consistently receive recognition for their outstanding patient care. Covenant was named among the top hospitals nationally. Both institutions have started the new millennium with growth and progress on their agendas. Both hospitals are expanding, especially with ambulatory care facilities in surrounding communities.
