International Health Program for Residents

In an effort to appeal to residents with an interest in international health, Synergy Medical and True North Missions has developed a unique opportunity to incorporate international health into the current residency curriculum in all of our residencies. The International Health Program gives residents a chance to gain knowledge in the diagnoses and treatment of common tropical diseases and conditions. Working with limited resources, it also allows the opportunity to expand clinical, diagnostic and management skills. Each opportunity will surely change the way you look at the world and your role as a health care provider.

Each year Synergy Medical with the help of True North Missions sends three teams of residents under the supervision of Synergy Medical faculty to Guatemala to provide healthcare to the underserved Mayan Indians.  During these trips, residents will have the unique opportunity to provide medical care which will greatly impact and improve the health of Mayan children and their families.  These indigenous people were displaced to isolated areas in bordering countries by Guatemala's 36 year Civil War (ended 1999) in order to avoid persecution and discrimination.  As a result, the United Nations refers to them as "The Forgotten People" and their population is estimated to be over 200,000.  Even though the Civil War has ended, their poverty and isolation impose many social and economic problems, especiall health care.
